Assonet, Massachusetts

Resting on the banks of the Assonet River, Assonet is one of two villages located in Freetown. As of 2014, the census reported a population of 9,093. Centered along North Main Street off of Route 79 from 24, Assonet contains the small commercial district of Freetown. The Assonet Historic District has been registered since 1999, and contains many buildings of local and widespread significance, such as the Assonet Burying Ground, Freetown Town Hall, and the United Church of Assonet, to name a few. Since 1950, students have attended Freetown Elementary (currently grades PreK-3). Students then go on to attend George R. Austin Intermediate School (4-5), then Freetown-Lakeville Middle School (6-8). For secondary school, students have the option of either Apponequet Regional High, or, for those who are more technically inclined, Old Colony Regional Vocational Technical High in Rochester accepts students from Assonet when there are openings. Bristol County Agricultural High is also available, and focuses primarily on agricultural and animal studies. Assonet has a hilly terrain with many outcroppings of bedrock, one of those being the famous Profile Rock. Numerous streams and brooks flow through the village, and there are several bodies of water; even salt marshes can be found.
